The 42 years old officer was born in Tucson to his parents Herbert and Eugenia. Though not much is out about his parents, his grandparents were pretty famous.

Pell is the grandson of Claiborne Pell, who was the senator of Rhode Island. His grandmother, Nuala Pell, was also from an influential family. She belonged to the family of the owners of the A&P grocery.

Pell had an active and sincere nature from his early days. He joined Georgetown University and graduated from there to become a lawyer. He worked as a fellow and associate before joining the United States Coast Guard.

While pursuing his career in the coast guard, Pell graduated from the Commission Office school. He worked hard in his job, which made him a fellow in the White house. He also got to work in the United States Department of Education.

Pell has an exciting career, but he has not been so lucky when it came to his first marriage.

Pell met his first wife, Michelle Kwan, for the first time in 2011. He dated the two-time Olympic medalist and five-time world champion figure skater, Kwan, for two years before turning their relationship into marriage in 2013.

High School and University

Pell did his schooling from the renowned private school, The Thacher School, located in Ojai, California.

During his schooling days, he also was part of School Year Abroad ( SYA). During this program, he even attended school in Spain and China. 

His time in Spain and China was fruitful as he is fluent in both Spanish and Mandarin.

Once high school was over, Pell enrolled in Harvard College. He graduated in social studies with a bachelor’s as well as honors degree.

After getting a bachelor’s degree, Pell continued his studies by enrolling in Georgetown University Law Center, from where he earned a Juris Doctor degree.

Along with the Juris Doctor degree, Pell also has a Masters in Science degree in management that he earned at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Pell was working successfully as a fellow and associate. But somehow, he started having an interest in joining the US Coast Guard. So, he got into it and even graduated in 1st class from the Coast Guard School.

Career and US Coast Guard

Pell started his career as a three-month intern in the US Department of State. After his internship was over, he was offered a position in the Central Intelligence Unit as a graduate fellow. 

He worked there for a year before moving to the Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as a summer associate. He completed three months here and received another summer associate job in Baker McKenzie.

By this time, he had worked hard and deliberately, which led him to become a fellow in the Obama-Biden White House for a year.

It opened the doors of opportunities for him as he got to work with different governmental bodies like the US Department of Education, National Security Council, etc.

After working in so many governmental bodies, Pell stood up for the presidency of Rhode Island. However, Gina Raimondo won the campaign, and Pell came third.

He lost badly, but he didn’t let the loss get him. He continued his work as a practitioner in residence at Brown University.

He was working fine in his career until he decided he wanted to join the US Coast Guard. He started as an appellate government counsel and worked hard.

His hard work paid off as he is now the senior officer and the commander in the US Coast Guard.
