Anthony Mark Hankins was born on  November 10, 1968, in  Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. He  is 55 years old. He grew up in Roselle with his parents; Ramone Moya (Father) and Mary Jane (Mother). 

The Hankins family consists of seven siblings, Anthony is the youngest and has a twin sister, Angie Hankins. When Hankins was 12 years old, his parents got divorced and his mother got remarried

Anthony Mark Hankins completed his middle school at Roosevelt Middle School in Roselle and got interested in designing when he took art classes and sewing classes in the school.

After graduating, Anthony attended Pratt Institute’s School of Design in Brooklyn, New York in 1986 and graduated from the institute at the age of 19 in 1988. Hankins was accepted to the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne as the first and only African-American student. He was the second American student to get access to such a prestigious school. He graduated from the  École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1989. 

After his graduation, Hankins was placed along with Karl Lagerfeld and Yves-Saint-Laurant in the school alumni which is a very big achievement in itself.

Career

Anthony Mark Hankins started his career in fashion designing while he was in Paris. He became the apprentice of Adrienne Vittadini, Willi Smith, Michael Paris, and Homer Layne between 1986 and 1987. Hankins then became the apprentice of  Yves Saint Laurant who is regarded as the foremost fashion designer of the twentieth century from 1988 to 1990.

Hankins returned to the U.S. in 1992 and was immediately hired by JCPenney as the Quality Assurance Manager, but was soon promoted to the in-house designer position in the Minority Supplier Development Division at JCPenney’s main office in Dallas. During this period he made sure to use his design and fashion skills to sharpen them for his dream. He is the first and only employee to achieve the post within eight weeks of working in the company. He worked for JCPenney’s corporation until 1994.

Hankins founded his first label, Ramone Moya Ltd. in 1994 whose initial line was carried out by JCPenney’s Corporate as Anthony had previously helped JCPenney to make a mark in the local market. It was also the umbrella company for the AMH Group and Antthony Mark Hankins Inc.

After its first release the label was able to make a huge buzz and was in the issue of the Dallas Morning News headlined “Breaking Out of the Pattern” on July 2, 1994, which was written by Maria Halkias. Anthony then expanded his business to Target with his line called ‘Authentics’ and Kmart with ‘Anjalise’, which proved to be very successful in the states. 

He gained worldwide success through the PX stores which sold designs for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) which were all designed in the USA. Because of his success, he got a direct connection to the Home Shopping Network through  Black Entertainment Television and made his first appearance on the Tv-show on March 31, 1996. This connection with Home Shopping Network turned out to be a huge benefit for both the parties involved.

As of 2024, Hankins is regarded as one of the most successful designers and has ten Fashion Labels under his name which include Anthony Originals, Anthony – Couture Collection, The Signature Collection of Anthony Mark Hankins, Authentics by Anthony Mark Hankins, Butterick Patterns, TonyWear, and Band of Artists to name a few.
