Apparently he decided to play for the 1984 Olympics from the USA but didn’t make the final selection. His NFL career began in 1984 and played for the Broncos from 1985 to 1995. He went on making three Super Bowl appearances in the 1980s.

After receiving huge criticism, Johnson vowed to have a positive change in his life. After receiving sobriety in 2013, he became an advocate for athletes undergoing addiction recovery and worked for Oglethorpe Inc. as a  rehabilitation ambassador. 

In 2019, he opened the Vance Johnson Recovery Center in Las Vegas, Nevada to help others.
